Lesson 12 Hellfire: Would God Really Do That – Answers

1. What is God really like?

God is love.

2. What is God’s desire for the entire human family?

The Lord is . . . not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

3. Is there really a hell?

Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

4. When is hell going to burn?

As the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire.

5. When will sinners go to hell?

The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

6. Where is hell?

They [Satan and all the unsaved] went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.

The heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

7. What happens to lost people who go to hell?

The soul who sins shall die.

The wages of sin is death.

This [hellfire] is the second death.

8. What, ultimately, is the condition of people who are burned in hell?

Behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,” Says the Lord of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branch. . . . You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet On the day that I do this,” Says the Lord of hosts.

9. What effect does hell have on the devil?

Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you.

10. But doesn’t the Bible say the wicked will burn forever?

The smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.

The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

11. What does “forever” mean when it refers to hellfire?

Hannah . . . said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the Lord and remain thereforever.”

I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.” So they worshiped the Lord there.

I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever.

Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

12. What event does the Bible use as being an example of what hell will be like?

Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them . . . are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly.

13. For whom was hell designed?

Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

14. Why does the Bible mention “unquenchable fire” if the fires of hell will eventually burn out?

The chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.

16. What will God do after hellfire has burned?

I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.
